Palomar Mountain Information and Highlights

Here's a quick rundown of our list:

Palomar Mountain Information and Highlights

The region known as Palomar Mountain is part of the Peninsular Ranges just a bit north from San Diego. This daunting group of chained peaks and mountains, that run and stretch from Southern California all the way to Mexico’s Baja area, are an offspring of an even greater conglomerate of summits that start off in Alaska. They are internationally recognized and hailed for their exquisite beauty and natural splendor.

Palomar Mountain, on one of the ridges of this system, has the added distinction, aside from being snuggled in a wonderful landscape of oaks, pines and creeks, of being the location of three of San Diego’s most honored landmarks: The Palomar Observatory, The Hale Telescope and the Palomar Mountain State Park.

The area, before the invasive Spaniards dared to waltz into its borders, was inhabited by the Native American tribe, Luiseno. Their sobriquet for the mountainous spot was “Paauw”, the high point, the very summit, was given an extra nickname: “Wikyo.”

Once the crown and its Conquistadores decided to get in on the action of this wonderful landscape, the place was instantly named “pigeon roost”, or “Palomar.” During the Spanish Colonial period the area was recognized for being the home of the band-tailed pigeon.

Finally, due to its attractive quality as a popular retreat during the late 19th century, the Palomar Mountain area has acquired enough fame and economical aid, to support a series of resorts, public schools and a dwindling permanent population.
