Serra Mesa is a community that resides in the eastern part of San Diego, California. It is roughly located between Interstate 805 and Interstate 15, north of Friars Road and south of Aero Drive. Serra Mesa is named for Junipero Serra, who was a Majorcan Franciscan friar who founded the Mission San Diego de Alcala. Nearby communities include: Kearny Mesa, Tierrasanta, Mission Valley, and Linda Vista. Originally, the area was part of the Mission Rancho Lands of San Diego that were granted to the Catholic Church by the King of Spain. When the Missions in the area were secularized by Mexico in 1834, the land was deeded over to various people, including Don Santiago Arguello, who would divide and sell some of the sixteen thousand acres of land that would become the Serra Mesa area.
