4S Ranch is a beautiful community that likes about twenty five miles north of downtown San Diego and only a short distance away from the Pacific Ocean. To the east of it is Rancho Bernardo. The community is also bordered by the Black Mountain Ranch, and Rancho Penasquitos to the south. The origins of 4S Ranch are somewhat shrouded in mystery. The first portion of what would become 4S Ranch was the first recorded owner of Rancho San Bernardo, Englishman Joseph Snook, in 1842. The “S” in 4S Ranch is believed to stand for the aforementioned Joseph Snook’s last name. The area passed through many different hands, and was sold off many times before it became the beautiful area that it is today and was officially named 4S Ranch.
