San Diego GSFA Residential Energy Retrofit Program (2017 Update)

If you have recently taken a look around your home and thought about making it more energy efficient, there is a great program you can take advantage of in San Diego.

The GSFA Residential Energy Retrofit Program can help you upgrade many aspects of your house to make it more energy efficient, which can help you save money.

It is also better for the environment.

Keep reading for all the details regarding this program and how you can qualify.

Here's a quick rundown of our list:

What it Entails

As technology continues to become better, there are many advances to products that you may not even think about.

This leads to cool inventions like windows that have multiple panes and insulation that keeps your home cool all summer long.

However, at the time you purchased your house, some of these things may not have been perfected yet.

With this GSFA program, you’ll have the chance to upgrade some of these things in your home.

You can finance up to 50,000 dollars into more energy efficient appliances and projects throughout your entire home.

The loan comes with a 6.5% interest rate, which is fixed, and amortizes over 15 years.

With this option, there is financing for 100% of the cost and there are not any income limits associated either.

This means that you don’t have to worry about being low income or making a certain amount of money to qualify.

Furthermore, there are no requirements when it comes to equity.

In other words, it doesn’t matter how much of your mortgage has been paid off before you apply for this type of loan.

Other Things to Know

There are a couple of things to be aware of if you are interested in this program.

One is that some mobile homes or other types of dwellings are not eligible.

At the same time, the loan doesn’t have to be used to fix up a primary residence, as it can be utilized on a vacation home, or rental property.

Another thing that is important is that you must have at least some of the utilities in your home courtesy of PG&E.

You must also use an approved contractor, which you can find through their website.

What Does it Cover?

There are many projects that this loan can cover, depending on what your home needs.

An evaluation is normally done on a home to see what can be improved.

Some of the things that can be upgraded include, heating and air conditioning units, lighting, insulation, water heaters, appliances, windows, and ducts.

It is also partially based on how much money you are qualified to borrow to make improvements.

Here’s a look at the two basic approaches.

GSFA Basic Home Upgrade

This program is designed to improve the energy efficiency of a home by at least 10%.

It will help you with the most basic solutions in your home and is especially useful if you are only eligible for the minimum amount with this loan.

If you qualify for an amount on the higher end, a complete assessment is likely to be done on your home.

This will determine what can be upgraded to make your home more efficient, so there’s essentially no limit to how eco-friendly your home can get.

You could end up saving more money with this advanced upgrade, although it will cost a bit more as well.

With both of these plans, you will have to get at least one piece of equipment upgraded, such as an AC, furnace, or another major appliance.

Another thing to remember is that depending on the work that was completed on your home, you may qualify for other rebates from the State of California, including the Energy Upgrade California Home Upgrade program.
