California is known as an expensive place to live, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t any budget friendly homes. Right now, there are several homes for sale under 300K, located in cities throughout San Diego. These cities are a little bit further away from the beach, but they still have a lot to offer for their residents. Below is a description of the five best cities, with three of the best properties for sale, listed in no particular order.

Located in the middle of Anza Borrego State Park, is Borrego Springs. With Anza Borrego State Park being the largest desert state park in the nation, Borrego Springs offers its residents several outdoor places to explore. Residents can check out Slot Canyon, Fonts Points, Coyote Canyon and several hiking trails. Other popular outdoor activities besides hiking include, playing golf at one of the four public golf courses, tennis at the tennis center or horseback riding. Borrego Springs is a dark sky city meaning there are no stop lights or any unnecessary lights, giving residents a great view of the night sky.
Borrego Springs is located 90 miles outside of downtown San Diego. The Borrego Springs Unified School District only has three schools, an elementary, middle and high school. Most homes in this area are pueblo-style, modern style and ranch style.

Only a mile away from the United States-Mexican Border, is the small city of Campo. Since the city is close to the border, it is a one-hour drive to the beach and 55 miles away from downtown San Diego. Although the beach is just a short drive away, Campo does have its own lake. Lake Morena County Park is great for fishing and camping. Another main attraction in Campo is the Campo Railroad Park and Museum which is a part of the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum Association.
Most of the residents in Campo have lived there for years, owning family businesses. This makes Campo a tight knit community. The schools in Campo are a part of the Mountain Empire Unified School District. They provide students with one elementary, middle and high school.

The city of Jacumba Hot Springs is located on the United States-Mexican Border. Making downtown San Diego and the nearest beach about 75 miles away. While the beach is over an hour drive away, Jacumba offers its residents other places to go for a quick swim. This includes Lake Domingo and a highly rated resort and spa. The Jacumba Hot Springs Resort and Spa is open year-round and offers swimming pools and a jacuzzi made from the natural hot springs mineral water. Jacumba offers its residents several other weekend activities including the Desert View Tower, Coyote’s Flying Saucer Retrievals and Repairs, the Old Bathhouse and Goat Canyon Trestle Bridge.
Jacumba Hot Springs no longer provides schools for the children living in the city, instead they attend the schools in the nearby city, Campo. Campo is only about 20 miles away from Jacumba.

The city of Julian was named an official California Historical Landmark. Julian is mostly known for its historical gold mining town and its Apple Festival. Julian celebrates all four seasons, making it the perfect climate to grow apples. It is one of the few places in San Diego that gets snow at least once a year. Julian offers its residents several places to explore such as Lake Cuyamaca, Cuyamaca Mountains, Cedar Creek Falls, William Heise Country Park and Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve.It is also only four miles away from the California Wolf Center. As for the nearest beach and downtown San Diego, Julian is only about an hour drive away from both.
The Julian Union School District offers one elementary and one junior high school. Then there is the Julian Union High School District that offers the high school. Parents also have the option of K-12 Julian Charter School.

Located in the forests of Palomar Mountain State Park is the city of Palomar Mountain. The city offers its residents several hiking trails, spots for camping and fishing for trout in Doane Pond. With its clear skies, Palomar Mountain is a great place to go star gazing. In fact, the mountain is known for the Palomar Observatory and Hale Telescope. Because Palomar Mountain is 5,000 feet above sea level, it is one of the few places in San Diego that experiences all four seasons. While the summers are usually dry, the mountain will see snow during the winter storms.
Palomar Mountain is about an hour away from the nearest beach and is about 60 miles away from downtown San Diego. Located in the state park is the Camp Palomar Outdoor School. The Valley Center-Pauma Unified School District also covers students who live on Palomar Mountain. They provide students an elementary, middle and high school.
